It appears that the management of The Chapel Arts Centre feel they are above the law. Last week with only days to go the venue cancelled the performance of my band, Empirical, simply because they felt that they were going to lose money. The owner, Philip Andrews, stubbornly insists that he "didn't authorise the gig" even though we have a signed contract from Charley Dunlap, his music director at the time, and the gig was on their website footprints of which are all over the internet - it was even previewed in the Bath Chronicle. Unbelievably Andrews has also declared his unwillingness to pay out the cancellation that is due. For our part we paid for promotional materials, PR, a van etc. doing everything we could do to help promote this performance and are severely out-of-pocket. In my many years of working in the music business I have never encountered such shameless lack of integrity in a promoter and warn other artists/art organisations to be cautious of any dealings with this venue. It's hard enough for jazz musicians to sustain a living in ordinary circumstances without the added difficulty of promoters defaulting on legal commitments.
