Far Away and Dimly Pealing
An event featuring pieces by Gavin Bryars from the Experimental Music Catalogue performed by Material, the BSU experimental music group, led by James Saunders.
The content and performance style of these pieces are as intriguing and rich as their titles - ‘Marvellous Aphorisms are Scattered Richly Throughout These Pages’, ‘Private Music’, ‘The Squirrel and the Ricketty-Racketty Bridge’, ‘1, 2, 1-2-3-4’, ‘Pre-Medieval Metrics’, ‘Made in Hong Kong’ and ‘Far Away and Dimly Pealing’.
These all text based pieces, not written in standard musical notation. The pieces’ fascination arises from how the performers choose to interpret the words, taking them from page to stage. We don’t want to give too much away beforehand, we want to keep a large element of surprise but to whet your appetite ‘The Squirrel and the Ricketty-Racketty Bridge’ is for two electric guitars, ‘Made In Hong Kong’ is played entirely on children’s toys and ‘1, 2, 1-2-3-4’ calls for a group of musicians playing the same set of music, but following different arrangements on headphones, rather than playing “together”.
The concert ends with ‘Far Away and Dimly Pealing’ which requires that a sound be produced one mile away from the performer yet audible to them, without being made by anybody else or by using explosives. What will they do? Come and find out.
