A concert by Bath Spa University's Choir, Orchestra and Wind Band. Programme includes:

Sibelius Symphony No. 2

Poulenc Gloria

Martin Ellerby Clarinet Concerto (soloist: Anna Hutchings)

Sibelius’s second symphony was inspired by a visit to Italy. However despite these warm and sunny origins, the symphony (and in particular the grandiose finale) became synonymous with Finland’s struggle for independence, and helped secure Sibelius’s place as a major force on the Finnish music scene.

Poulenc’s setting of the words of the Mass is colourful, fresh and to some, almost irreverent in style. Short and joyous, hearing Poulenc’s Gloria always an uplifting experience.

Martin Ellerby wrote his clarinet concerto with the aim of it being ‘attractive to soloists, bands and audiences’. This piece will be performed by Anna Hutchings, one of our third year students.

Consecrated in 1777, St. Swithin’s Church was the parish church of Georgian Bath and is now the only remaining 18th century parish church in the city. It’s a beautiful church and we hope you’ll agree that it’s a fine concert venue.
