Gwilym Simock, one of the most gifted pianists and composers on the British jazz scene, performs at the Michael Tippett Centre this January.

Described by the Chick Corea as “a creative genius”, Simcock moves effortlessly between jazz and classical music, at times comfortably inhabiting both genres. His influences include jazz legends Keith Jarret, Chick Corea and John Taylor, as well as classical composers Ravel, Stravinsky and Mark-Anthony Turnage.

In the eight years since he graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, he has been the first jazz musician on the BBC’s New Generation Artists scheme, premiered his piano concerto Progressions at the BBC Proms, performed as a soloist across Europe and launched his own world-class trio. A multi-award winner, he was voted ‘Jazz Musician of the Year’ at the 2007 Parliamentary Jazz awards, nominated for the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards as ‘Best Instrumentalist’ and voted one of the ‘1,000 most influential people in London’ by The Evening Standard.

Expect an evening of exciting and virtuosic playing from this phenomenally gifted young performer.
